Have you tried to make sense of God’s methods before you can fully receive them? The purpose of our journey with God is not to uncover a formula we can explain but to cultivate a relationship we can live.
A God-Sized Vision
Yesterday, I had a realization that surprised me.
It had nothing to do with finances.
It had everything to do with my heart.
As we were driving home, my husband brought up a conversation that has surfaced many times over the years. It was one that would usually frustrate me—not because I doubted God, but because I couldn’t see the path forward.
God has given us a vision so big it can only be Him. In fact, for over seventeen years He has continued to whisper the same invitation:
Dream bigger.
Over those years, I’ve realized He wasn’t just building the vision.
He was building our hearts to carry it.
Even more than that, He was drawing us into His own heart, revealing who He is through the very vision He had placed inside us.
I’ve shared much of what He’s taught me through this journey. But quietly, in the back of my mind, one question remained.
How was God going to provide for it?
I never doubted that He would.
I knew He would.
I knew He was preparing us.
I knew He was using every step of the journey to reveal Himself.
I knew He was always the destination.
Surprised By a Changed Heart
As we drove, my husband mentioned another possible avenue of provision.
Normally, I would have immediately started evaluating it. Could God really work that way? Would that make sense? How would we explain it?
But this time…
I didn’t.
Instead, I simply noticed something had changed.
There was no tension.
No need to figure it out.
No urgency to explain how God should provide for His own vision.
Instead, there was peace.
In that quiet moment, I realized the Father had been doing something much deeper than preparing us for a vision.
He had been transforming my heart.
Somewhere along the way, without even realizing it, He had been teaching me to abide, to receive, and to remain teachable.
And suddenly I saw what had changed…
Can God Work This Way?
Looking back, I finally understood why those conversations had always unsettled me.
Every time we talked about provision for the vision, I immediately began evaluating the possibilities.
Not because I believed God couldn’t use something unexpected…
But because I couldn’t imagine teaching it later.
If God provided that way, what lesson would people learn?
How could I explain it?
How could someone else reproduce it?
Then it hit me.
Why did I think I needed to?
Without realizing it, I had quietly placed a condition on what I was willing to receive from God.
If I couldn’t understand it…
If I couldn’t explain it…
If I couldn’t build a principle from it…
Then somehow it didn’t seem like a fitting way for God to work.
The Kingdom Isn’t a Formula
I thought I had left transactional faith behind.
I had stopped believing that blessing came through perfect performance.
But another layer was still hidden beneath the surface.
I had traded one transaction for another.
Instead of trying to earn God’s provision…
I was trying to make sense of His methods before I could fully receive them.
As though the purpose of the journey was to uncover a formula that could be taught.
But the Kingdom isn’t a formula.
It’s a relationship.
Jesus Never Did the Same Thing Twice
Jesus never seemed concerned with giving people a method they could master.
He healed blind people differently almost every time.
Sometimes He spoke.
Sometimes He touched.
Sometimes He used mud.
Sometimes people touched the edge of His garment.
Sometimes He healed from a distance.
Sometimes He waited.
Imagine trying to write The Seven Steps to Receiving Your Miracle.
Jesus would have broken the pattern the very next day.
Why?
Because He wasn’t teaching people how to control the outcome.
He was teaching them to trust the Father.
That is what abiding looks like.
It is releasing our grip on understanding and opening our hands to receive.
Why Do We Feel the Need to Explain God?
Somewhere along the way, I had unconsciously become more committed to explaining God than experiencing Him.
I wanted my life to make sense.
I wanted every provision to become a lesson.
Every breakthrough to become a principle.
Every miracle to become a method.
But God has never asked us to explain Him.
He has asked us to know Him.
The wind blows wherever it pleases.
You can hear it.
You can feel it.
You can raise your sail to catch it.
But you cannot control it.
The Holy Spirit is like that.
He refuses to become a system.
He remains a Person.
The Source Isn’t the Point
That realization brought an unexpected peace.
Because suddenly I saw that how God chooses to provide for His vision is His business—not mine.
If He chooses to open one door, praise Him.
If He chooses another, praise Him.
If He provides in a way I never would have imagined, praise Him.
The source isn’t the point.
The Father is.
We are Not Seeking a Method
For so long I believed the journey was something I needed to teach.
Now I think the journey is something I am simply meant to live.
People don’t need my formulas.
They need to see what it looks like when a daughter trusts her Father.
Perhaps that’s why Jesus said,
“Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Matthew 6:33
He didn’t invite us to seek the method.
He invited us to seek the King.
The rest belongs to Him.
That may be the greatest freedom I’ve discovered yet.
I no longer need to understand every way the Father works.
I simply want to recognize His hand when He reaches toward mine.
Because the Kingdom was never something to master.
It was always Someone to receive.
The Kingdom was never a system to figure out.
It has always been a Father inviting His children to walk with Him.
The point in that car wasn’t that we figured out how God would provide.
The vision hadn’t changed.
Our financial state hadn’t changed.
But I had.
