Boredom, an Invitation to Creativity
How many times do we as moms hear, “Mom, I’m bored. What can I do?” Actually, I am not threatened by that statement because I think it is an invitation to creativity…or getting extra chores done around the house. The trick is to be armed with idea books for them to peruse as well as supplies they can rummage through to put their thoughts into works of art. Some of my favorite creative arts, crafts, and nature books are:
- Herbal Adventures: Backyard Excursion and Kitchen Creations for Kids and Their Families by Rachel Jepson Wolf
- What Shall We Do Today? 60 Creative Crafting Projects for Kids by Catherine Woram
- The Unplugged Family Activity Book by Rachel Jepson Wolf
- Wild & Free Nature: 25 Outdoor Adventures for Kids to Explore, Discover, and Awaken Their Creativity by Ainsley Arment
- Wee Wonderfuls: 24 Dolls to Sew and Love by Hillary Lang
Of course, there are always great board games or cards to play, wholesome literature and picture books to read, cookies to bake or dinner to prepare, legos, train tracks, Magna-tiles, Lincoln Logs, and videos to create (using mom’s iPhone, and a few fun apps like iMovie). There are also some great lawn games like Crockett, badminton, lawn darts, cornhole, bocce ball, and volleyball to play. As a last resort… snuggle up with a good family movie and some Popcorn with a Pop.
How to Prepare Your Wand and Bubble Solution:
Giant Bubbles with a Homemade Bubble Wand
Unplug from the electronics and head outdoors for a fun afternoon with family creating giant bubbles. With a few tree branches, kitchen twine, and a washer, you can prepare a homemade Bubble Wand to use with the perfect Homemade Bubble Solution. Unleash your children's creativity and watch these bubbles soar!
Ingredients
- For the wand:
- Two 12"-18" sticks, thumb diameter, trimmed of all branches
- pocket knife or branch cutter
- Two pieces of Kitchen twine (about 5 feet total depending on the desired length of wand)
- One small metal nut or washer 1/2- 3/4 inch diameter
- For the Bubble Solution:
- Bucket
- 6 cups warm water
- 1/2 cup corn starch
- 1/2 cup heavy-duty dish soap (like Dawn or Ajax)—no natural or organic soap here...it doesn't hold the bubbles
- 1 T baking powder
- 1 T vegetable glycerin
- 15 drops of essential oil like peppermint, lavender, orange, or lemongrass (optional for a fun scent)
Instructions
For the Wand:
Trim your sticks to remove any branches
Tie a piece of twine from the top of one stick to the other. Make sure they are both tied tightly.
Now tie the second piece of twine to the string on one side. slip in the nut or washer so it falls to the middle of the twine and tie the other end to the other side of the twine. See picture for description
For the bubble solution:
In your bucket, stir together the warm water and constarch until dissolved
Gently stir in the remaining ingredients being careful not to make a lot of bubbles on the surface of your solution. (Save the bubbles for the air not the bucket)
Create Giant Bubbles:
With the wand sticks facing out in front of you, dip the wand into the bucket
Hold the sticks together and completely submerge the twine in the bubble solution
Carefully lift the wand from the bucket and slowly separate the sticks while walking slowly backward
You can create bubbles of any size. If you prefer smaller ones, just bring the sticks together and snip off a bubble. There should be plenty of solution left on the wand to produce several small bubbles on each turn. Otherwise, you can make a dragon-sized bubble by encircling yourself with the wand as you walk backwards- see images

Making Your Homemade Bubble Wand
Preparing the bubble wand and the bubble solution is easy. Set out the ingredients and point your kiddos in the right direction. My younger boys gathered and prepared the sticks, tied the strings, and mixed the solution. Additionally, Dad had to show them how to dip and snip the bubbles, but after a few times, they were off. Keep your wand for future use and always keep enough of the ingredients on hand to make the perfect bubble solution all summer long.
