Yesterday, my 5-year-old son, Micah, and I took a walk up the lane to get the mail. It was around 4 O’clock so the sun’s shadows were stretching long. He held my hand as we walked, just listening to the sounds all around us. This was our special time. He asked questions and told me about all he was seeing around him. He shared about dreams he had the previous night and what he didn’t like about a particular movie. I told him how much I loved him and enjoyed being with him. He held my hand tighter and smiled up at me.
Then he started to walk a little bit in front of me, while still holding my hand, and I asked him what he was doing. He said, “Look Mommy I am walking in your shadow.” You have to be walking pretty close to be walking in someone’s shadow. I looked down and saw that we were one in our shadows. This reminded me of Psalm 91:1, “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.“ The secret place is a place where you and God can share intimate secrets. This is the kind of relationship God wants with you. He wants you so close that you become hidden in His shadow. The secret place is a place of intimacy; the happiest place on earth.
We get a glimpse, now and then, when we are really watching or listening to the Father’s heart. I felt it yesterday afternoon while walking and talking with my son in our secret place…with him in my shadow.
