Baby Bum Balm Benefits
You need a diaper balm to create a protective barrier on your baby’s skin, shielding it from exposure to moisture, urine, or stool. Left unprotected, a baby’s bum can become irritated or develop diaper rash. It is recommended to use with every diaper change to keep baby dry and happy and prevent baby’s bum from chaffing due to excessive wetness.

Why Tallow and Aloe for Bum Balm?
Tallow is simply rendered fat from a cow or sheep. I love that it is 100% natural, won’t clog your pores, and doesn’t leave that greasy feel after it is applied. It intensely moisturizes and closely mimics the skin’s natural oils. Loaded with vitamins A, D, K, and E, these fat-soluble vitamins are nourishing to the skin.
Aloe Vera reduces swelling and inflammation, diminishes dark spots and scars, speeds up wound recovery, supports the production and release of collagen, soothes sunburn, clears up acne (including baby acne), and moisturizes the skin. It really is a superhero in the natural home remedies cabinet.
Have you looked at the labels of most baby products? You can’t even pronounce most of the words. Why put junk on your baby’s skin that you can’t pronounce, let alone know what it is? After all, our skin is our largest organ. If we wouldn’t put it in our mouth, why would we put it on our skin? As mamas, we want to give our babies the best and cleanest products because their bodies are absorbing everything they are exposed to.

Baby Bum Balm
Ingredients
- 4 oz grass-fed tallow
- 2 oz Calendula-infused olive oil
- 1 oz healing bentonite clay
- 0.5 oz organic beeswax
- 1 T aloe vera
- 10 drops each frankincense and lavender essential oil
- 6 drops Vitamin E oil (natural preservative)
Instructions
Using a kitchen scale and a heat-safe bowl, weigh the tallow, calendula oil, clay, and beeswax, taring the scale with each measurement. I use my Kitchenaid mixing bowl because I will whip it after all the ingredients are added.
Place your bowl over a pot of simmering water to create a double boiler, and stir until the ingredients are melted and combined.
Remove from heat. Allow to cool slightly before adding essential oils and aloe. They are heat-sensitive.
Add essential oils, aloe, and Vitamin E oil and stir.
Whip for 3-5 minutes with the whisk attachment on your Kitchenaid mixer. Beating air into the salve is not a necessary step, but it does allow the ingredients to fully incorporate and makes the salve more easily spreadable. Watch carefully, as this balm contains beeswax and will harden. The goal is to achieve a creamy texture without it becoming hard. If it hardens, just slightly melt again and re-whip.
Pour the mixture into a clean 8-oz jar and allow it to cool at room temperature.
Label and date.
Store away from direct light or heat.
Apply using a clean spatula at each diaper change to treat or prevent diaper rash.
This is also amazing for eczema to use after a bath.
Calendula-Infused Olive Oil for Baby Bum Balm

Calendula flowers top my list of favorite flowers to grow in my herb garden. Their cheerful yellow-orange faces smile and make me happy. They are a perfect introduction to healing herbs and flowers, as they are quite prolific and have so many wonderful uses in your natural remedy chest. You can either grow your own or purchase dried flowers from a reputable source, such as Mountain Rose Herbs or, in a pinch, Amazon.
Calendula boasts numerous nourishing properties, including antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antibacterial. These properties make it useful for soothing skin issues such as eczema, wound recovery, and diaper rash.
Preparing Calendula Oil for Baby Bum Balm
Preparing your own calendula-infused olive oil is easy-peasy, even for a busy mama. Homestead Family has a recipe for a slow-infusion method. This takes anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks to prepare, so it requires some planning, but it is well worth having a jar of calendula oil on hand for all your herbal preparations.
I prefer a quick 4- to 6-hour method using my Excalibur dehydrator. Fill a quart-sized jar with dried calendula flowers (either purchased or dried from your garden) and cover it with a high-quality olive oil. Set the jar in a dehydrator on a medium-low setting for 4 to 6 hours, allowing the oil to infuse without compromising its therapeutic benefits. After infusion, drain the oil through a cheesecloth into a clean, dark quart jar, and store it out of reach of heat and sunlight. Ultimately, if you are pressed for time, you may purchase calendula oil on Amazon.

Preparing your own herbal body care rewards you with the benefits of controlling the quality of the ingredients you use, beautiful and thoughtful gifts, as well as the sense of accomplishment you feel from preparing your own products. I hope you enJOY preparing this Baby Bum Balm, perhaps giving it away as gifts to your friends with babies. Share this recipe and spread the word about the fun of working with herbs and preparing natural body care recipes. Blessings!
